At the turn of the calendar year we all tend to make New Year resolutions. To some it’;s very important yet to others it’;s a somewhat frivolous attempt to change the way we live because there’;s always some part of us that we’;re not happy with or we want to improve.
Most changes at New Year therefore revolve around things that we want to cut out, in other words we approach this whole process from a negative point of view. But why do we have to be so negative? Ultimately I think we are trying to work out how to get motivated for the New Year after all the hustle and bustle of Christmas has died down.
In the past I’;ve been with you in the boat that drifts from Xmas to New Year dreading that first day back at work but now I know how to get motivated for the New Year and it starts by providing honest heartfelt answers to these questions below .
Why not look at what’;s been good and therefore what we can improve? What can you build upon and really really create in the coming year? Likewise, do not just think about what you want to have ….. think about what you want to be as well.
As an aside, you do not have to do this exclusively on the calendar year. Why not do it at the turn of your business financial year to focus on your career or business aspirations?
Reflecting On Last Year
What have you been most pleased with last year?
What have you learned about yourself?
Who are you when you are at your very best?
What would you like to build on next year?
For The Coming Year
When you reach the end of this coming year what do you want to feel good about?
Write down your top 3 goals (personal or professional) for the next weeks, month or year: –
What things are so important to you that you do not want to lose sight of them in the next 12 months? (eg family, personal achievements, financial security, integrity etc)
At the moment what things are fed up of or find most frustrating? What are you now compelled to change?
If there was one thing that you do not do now but could do and do frequently that would make a significant positive difference in your personal life, what would it be?
Answer that same question for your professional life … one thing you do not do now, you could do and do on a regular basis that would make a big positive impact.
In the context of the people below, what do you need to be honest about and confront …
With you, yourself?
With your partner or loved ones?
With work collections?
I want to be more …
I want to be less …
What is your secret dream?
In the context of your work, what is your vision?
What things are you wasting your time on?
And finally if you had a fairy godmother with a magic wand who granted you three wishes, what would they be?
I hope that helps you get off to a great start this New Year. Are you ready and eager to get started? Do you now know how to get motivated? I hope so.
